Warro's wine Bar, Nottingham

The photos on this page show some images of the Warro’s wine bar, Nottingham, taken in the late 1970's. Located on Bottle Lane, behind the Queen Elizibeth Pub. It never seemed to sell much wine, just lots of very rough cider. Generally you needed to have had a couple of drinks to numb your palate before you drank the cider at Warro's. The cider was thick, cloudy and corrosive. If you swilled it around your mouth and then ran your tongue over your teeth, your tongue would stick to your teeth!. You may think that Rock City has a sticky floor, but Warro's floor had been anointed with many years of spilt cider. Walking on this floor was like having magnetic boots on a space ship. The men's toilet was called the paddling pool. The tables were old treadle sewing machine tables with the sewing machine removed, but the treadle still in place and working. A drunken urge to see how fast you could work the treadle only helped top up the spilt cider on the floor. At the end of many Friday nights at Warro’s we would end up at the Kebab shop at the top of Victoria Street, and try to finish this culinary delight before having a final wee wee in the toilets under the square and then catching the last bus home ( and trying to keep the unpredictable, and possibly explosive mixture of Cider and Kebab in your body until you got home - or at least off the bus ).

No reminisce about Warro’s would be complete without mentioning the music, it was mostly rock - Thin Lizzy etc. I remember that Bill Nelson’s Furniture Music being played a lot, along with many rock standards. But every night ( from what I remember through the fog of cider) ended with Freebird, occasionally accompanied by a drunken chorus. This would have been ok except the sound system was appalling. Unless you heard it you could not believe a sound system could be created to sound that bad.

Mr Warro, never did learn his real name. He probably told me but I would be in no state to remember.

Warro's was demolished many years ago. There is now a Ibis hotel on the site. So another part of my youth is obliterated from history.
